French artist Prune Nourry and the world-renowned restaurant Mugaritz invited Pinch to bring Prune’s film Serendipity’s food display to life for its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Prune Nourry is a French artist whose practice spans sculpture, photography, film, and performance, often exploring the human body, identity, and cycles of life through immersive installations.
Mugaritz is a space for research and exploration, driven by curiosity and a relentless desire to push the boundaries of gastronomy. Drawing from science, art, and philosophy, their work is guided by the belief that the process is often more meaningful than the outcome.
Serendipity tells the story of Prune Nourry’s personal experience with breast cancer. In collaboration with Mugaritz, we designed a culinary performance centered on procreation and the life cycle. The experience unfolded through fungal still lifes and “procreative” cocktails, edible expressions that mirrored the film’s themes of transformation, fragility, and regeneration.
Every element was conceived as part of a living narrative, where food became both medium and message.
The result was a visually arresting, interactive food display that united Prune Nourry’s sculptural language and film, Mugaritz’s experimental gastronomy, and Pinch’s signature approach to food furniture.
Staff dressed in nurse uniforms paraded and served each piece throughout the evening, transforming service into performance. We designed a custom “cigarette tray” to pass milk-flavored ice cream, an unexpected, poetic gesture that echoed the project’s themes.
The experience became a disruptive and deeply moving way to bring the film, the artist, and the chefs into unison, blurring the line between art, cinema, and cuisine.
